A Mini Course in Yoga Anatomy

  • The Ivy Yoga School Ivy, VA 22945 USA (map)

The goal of this program is to "uncomplicate" anatomy as we apply it to yoga asanas, making the study of our body easy and practical.

The program focuses on:

  • the study of the connective tissue and how it affects flexibility,
  • the functioning of the major structures of the musculoskeletal system (bones, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia),
  • how anatomical variations affect practice,
  • the vertebral column and how to prioritize its integrity in practice, and
  • the integration of all of this into understanding the core.

For a proper understanding of the yoga asanas, the course will be approached without losing sight of the individual as a whole. We will not only look at the physical, but also the energetic, emotional, and spiritual aspects.

Sept 14: Friday evening 7:00-9:00pm

Connective Tissue: The Inner World (& Muscular System)

The network of fibrous connective tissue within the body has been with us all along, but we're just starting to comprehend its nature and the important role that it plays in the body's health and functioning. In this lesson we will study the fascia, tendons, and ligaments, and discuss the role of the connective tissues in the practice of yoga asanas (including their impact on the  body and even the mind).

Sept 15: Saturday afternoon, 12:30-2:30pm

Skeleton System & The Spine

One of the most debilitating problems that affects us at any age is the compression and misalignment of the spine. In this lesson we will discuss the anatomy of the spine and look at how the stretching, twisting, and strengthening of yoga asanas, and the emphasis that is placed on building and maintaining correct posture, can affect the spine.

Oct 5:  Friday evening, 7:00-9:00pm

Anatomy of the Core

In this lesson we will discuss how a stable core and functional psoas muscle can enhance joint integrity, muscular tone, breathing, and healthy organ functioning. Through understanding the role of the psoas muscle in core awareness and core stability, we will practice asanas for improved core stability and discover the connections between the core and breathing.

Oct 26: Friday evening, 7:00-9:00pm

Anatomy of Forward Bends

The benefits, risks and contraindications, alignment principles, and energetic actions will be covered. We will discuss how to practice forward bends in a safe and easeful way, taking into consideration how anatomical variations affect practice.

Nov 9: Friday evening 7:00-9:00pm

Anatomy of Backbends & Twists

The benefits, risks and contraindications, alignment principles, and energetic actions will be covered. We will discuss how to practice backbends and twists in a safe and easeful way, taking into consideration how anatomical variations affect practice.

Fees: $30 single session/$125 for entire course
