Movement Snack: Freedom for Your Pelvis

September 21 2022 | Written by Leticia Padmasri

The pelvis is an area of the body in which many of us experience pain and dysfunction. When our pelvis is not moving the way nature intended it to, it can affect our ability to sit or stand comfortably, pick up something off the floor, or evacuate.

On an emotional level, imbalances in this area can make us feel fearful of losing control, frustrated creatively, and stuck in life.

Many of us who live in this sedentary western-based lifestyle tend to be quite “disconnected” from the pelvis. This lack of connection can get our pelvis locked into only one position or a small range of positions.

When we work on the different ways the pelvis can move and we explore movement variations in this region, we increase our brain connection to this area of the body.

This greater brain-pelvis connection will improve the quality of our movement and increase the amount of movement options that we have accessible to us.

I'm not claiming that this practice I share with you today will treat any pelvic issue…  but when we enhance our awareness and movement of the pelvis, we have a greater chance to make positive transformations in the body overall!

Taking Ayurveda to the Mat

Following one of Ayurveda’s basic premises, which is that we should adjust our activities (and foods too) with the change of the seasons, the fall season is then the time to increase our focus on managing Vata energy in the body & mind.

The major home for Vata energy is in the pelvis, so adding some extra work to your pelvis will increase the circulation of blood and prana in this area which in turn will support Vata dosha.

The sequence below explores our ability to tilt the pelvis forward, backward, and laterally. It also challenges us to hold our pelvis neutral as we move towards the child’s pose and back to the tabletop position - something that is easier said than done!

Until next time… keep moving!
