Movement Snack: Improving Motion of the Shoulder Blades

April 20, 2022 | Written by Leticia Padmasri

This month we will give our shoulder blades a movement snack!

As we move deeper into spring (Kapha season), the trees are coming back from hibernation with full force, and pollen is increasing. The rain comes and makes the land soggy and muddy. The combination of moisture (water) and dust (earth) brings a heavy quality to the earth and we feel that in our bodies and minds as well.

This is Kapha dosha (water and earth energy) accumulating inside of us…

One of the main sites of Kapha accumulation is the chest area, and accumulation here can lead to congestion, heavy breathing, colds, cough, etc.

Our shoulder blades happen to be just behind the chest!

So, moving our shoulder blades more often will help keep the circulation flowing in that area, lifting up the heaviness of Kapha.

And a big plus is that this practice promotes:

  • optimal ranges of motion,

  • greater neural control of motion in this area, and

  • increased awareness of an often tense area of our back.

Watch the video below to start snacking on some shoulder blades motion!

Until next time… keep moving!
